I came across a website today that brought tears to my eyes, happy tears of nostalgia. The website is named Toy Fishing Rod.

It reminded me of a time when my family went to Arcadia, Florida, where my brother-in-law’s family had about 20 acres of land, a mobile home, two small fishing lakes, shetland ponies, cows, vegetable garden, etc. There were so many things there to entertain the kids and all of us. We would bring our campers and tents and spend the weekends camping out, riding ATVs, and fishing all day. This was in the early to mid 80’s.

I don’t think there was ever a time when I went to Arcadia that something crazy didn’t happen to me. The umbrella provided little shade and, more times than not, being blond and Irish, I would end up with a bad sunburn, which looked really silly when I took off my sunglasses and flip-flops. One time, it was so bad that when I got home I had to go to the hospital for sunburn treatment.

My son, Patrick, started his senior year last week. On Friday, they were having a guest speaker for his business course, Virtual Enterprise, and were required to wear company attire. Patrick didn’t own a nice pair of slacks, let alone a button-down shirt and tie. All he wears are jeans and t-shirts. And let’s not forget about the zippered hoodie that he wears, rain or shine.

So, less than a week after stocking up on school supplies, new jeans and t-shirts, we went shopping again. I was quite surprised at the selections he made, especially the nice blue and black striped tie that matched the shirts and slacks.

So, this is Patrick before he left for school:

He looks so handsome in a tie, don’t you think? I actually believed that he liked the way he looked, and he wore it so well. I bet he’d look awesome in a tux!

I have tinnitus – ringing in the ears. It’s annoying but I’ve learned to live with it for the past 2-1/2 years.

What is Tinnitus?

: tin·ni·tus
: Tinnitus Pronunciation:
: noun \ˈti-nə-təs, tə-ˈnī-təs\
: Definition of TINNITUS
: a sensation of noise (as a ringing or roaring) that is caused by a bodily condition (as a disturbance of the auditory nerve or wax in the ear) and typically is of the subjective form which can only be heard by the one affected.

I don’t mention it very often, and it’s hard to explain what it’s like to have tinnitus. I just tell people that it is a constant hissing that never stops. The only time that I don’t notice it is when I take a shower or when the outside hose was running. The sound of the running water washes out the hissing sound (pun intended).

It doesn’t stop me from going to sleep, but it might be why I sometimes wake during the night. Well, that and the fact that I have to go to the bathroom. I don’t dream of hissing sounds, so when I’m sleeping is the only time that I don’t hear it at all. So, the question is, “If I’m asleep and don’t hear it, is the hissing still there?” It reminds me of the riddle, “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” I’m sure that it does.

From left, Larry, Jonathon, Misty, Donna, Joseph, Lauren

This is a photo of my sister Donna, her husband Larry, their daughter Misty and three grandchildren, Jonathon, Lauren and Joseph. Everyone seems to tower over my sister, but she is at least 5’6″. They also have a son who’s married with two children. I’ll post photos of them later.

I live my life vicariously through my sister and her kids. Hardly anything exciting happens in my life. Well, except for the fire and gas leak next door the other day, but things like that don’t happen very often, thank goodness. And the occasional visitor, like my sister, my oldest son, or my best friend.

Between my sister and her kids, there is always something going on.
